Fantastic Flying Books Ride Vehicle

For the class, Entertainment Design 3, I had to take the children’s book, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, and turn it into a fully functioning ride. This class is only the ideation phase so my classmates and I could come together and create a narrative divided among us for the next phase in this project.

Story Beats

  • Town Untouched: The queue line contains the New Orleans styled town that is untouched. Mr. Morris is seen reading his books on his balcony peacefully. However, the skies are dark and old TV and radios throughout the queue line suggest a storm is approaching.

  • Storm: After boarding the ride vehicle guests are immediately sucked into a gigantic storm. Inside buildings and people fly by your vehicle, to the left is Mr. Morris running on a spinning house trying to get his book back.

  • Wreckage: After the storm spits out the guests the wreckage of the town is shown. Only black and white destroyed buildings, and wordless books and scattered everywhere.

  • Splash of Color: After seeing all of the damage the guests follow Morris down a weaving path until they are met by a flying lady. She is being pulled through the air by books on strings. She smiles and gives Morris a book which creates a puddle of color around the area. She then points towards a building in the distance.

  • Library: Guests enter and fly through the library. All of the books inside celebrate your arrival by flying around and dancing with each other.

  • Enter Book: Guest approach a large book and are sucked into a story.

  • Sucked Into Story: Guests fly through words and letters that create wonderful stories.

  • Exit Book: Guests exit the book and are brought back into the library. There Morris tells guest that they need to spread books throughout the land.

  • Spreading Books: Guest go back to the black and white wreckage where they spread books to the people who don’t have any. Color then floods the land.

  • Happy Ending: Guest head towards the library, as they approach Mr. Morris meets with them to leave the library in their hands.

  • Unloading Area/Gift Shop: Guests unloading in the library. The gift shop is fully of interactivity and games so that guests can create their own stories.

Ride Vehicle

After reading the book, and developing the main story beats, I decided to create an original ride vehicle for the class’s concept. I wanted guests to feel like they are flying through the story and feeling like they are the main characters.

Switching Gears

After being randomly assigned the “Grey Wasteland” show set from a combined class-wide storyboard, I immediately started to construct the environment in Maya. After fully constructing and rendering my scene in Unreal Engine I produced a successful show set for a larger ride.
